East Gippsland Family History Group

One of the oldest regional family history groups in Victoria, East Gippsland Family History Group has an extensive range of resources for both local and worldwide research and is the only FamilySearch affiliated library east of Melbourne with online access to more than 400 million records worldwide (including East Gippsland) that cannot be accessed from home.

Our well-equipped research centre has original hardcopy, databases and e-resources plus access to online free and subscriber search engines such as Ancestry, FamilySearch, FindMyPast and more.
Specialist records include:

  • Digital copies of local newspapers Bairnsdale Advertiser to 1972 and Every Week to 1946 – not available on Trove.
  • Extensive local cemetery records for East Gippsland, including the Vickers funeral director records, also registers, sexton register and photographs of each grave in the Bairnsdale cemetery.
  • Databases of East Gippsland school registers, including pupil lists, inspector records and school magazines.
  • A comprehensive World War 1 database and photographs of soldiers and nurses who served (or tried to) from the East Gippsland region.
  • An extensive collection of hard to source regional histories.

We also operate the most complete primary source digitising program in the region.
Visitors are welcome to use the facilities on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (except over Christmas). A research service is available for a modest fee.
Yearly membership gives access to all group holdings plus The Black Sheep, our quarterly newsletter, which has been highly commended in the Local History Awards for Victoria.
